Het werk van de Zweedse kunstenaar Johan Gustavsson (1978, SE) heeft zich in de afgelopen jaren sterk ontwikkeld en gaat steeds specifieker in op de intermenselijke conventies die binnen onze huidige maatschappij leven. Op zeer subtiele wijze weet hij in zijn getekende en ruimtelijke ensceneringen de spanningsvelden tussen verschillende machten uiteen te zetten. Je herkent in het werk van Gustavsson direct de ijzingwekkende stiltes waarin een groepsdynamiek tot stilstand komt en het ongemak zwaar in de lucht hangt.
Gustavsson’s werk komt voort uit zeer geconcentreerde - bijna meditatieve - momenten die hij actief opzoekt. Op deze momenten laat hij al zijn eerdere ervaringen samenvallen en kan hij zich als optelsom daarvan verhouden tot het papier. Hierdoor is hij niet alleen beschouwer maar ook een uitgesproken deelgenoot van zijn leefwereld.Grote thema's als esthetiek, de positie van de kunstenaar in de kunstwereld en de wijze waarop kunst zich verhoudt tot de maatschappij vermengen zich eenvoudig met bescheiden momentopnames uit zijn eigen leven. Vaak met een beschamende en tegelijkertijd ontroerende ondertoon.
In de afgelopen 10 jaar heeft Gustavsson een oeuvre opgebouwd met een uitgesproken signatuur. Om de continue ontwikkeling tot een hoogtepunt te laten komen zal hij op 20 januari 2012 een publicatie presenteren in de context van zijn expositie. In de publicatie is een flink aantal van zijn nieuwste tekeningen verzameld, afgewisseld met beeldmateriaal uit zijn eigen collectie van amateurtekeningen.
De Vlaamse kunstcriticus Hans Theys (internationaal befaamd om zijn auteurschap en uitgeverij) heeft voor deze gelegenheid het werk van Gustavsson tekstueel in een inhoudelijk kader geplaatst. De vormgeving is in handen van Nico Feragnoli.
De publicatie wordt aan het eind van de expositie gepresenteerd bij LhGWR, op vrijdag 20 januari om 20.00 uur
Johan maakt deel uit van de artistieke leiding van kunstenaarsinitiatief 1646 in de Boekhorststraat en cureerde in die hoedanigheid uiteenlopende projecten in binnen- en buitenland. Tegelijkertijd doceert hij ook aan de Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunst. Zijn eigen werk heeft echter een steeds belangrijker positie gekregen. Dit blijkt uit de exposities die hij recentelijk heeft gehad. Zo exposeerde hij onder andere in Berlijn, Boedapest, Stockholm, Zürich, Johannesburg en Montreal. In de afgelopen maanden exposeerde hij nog bij galerie Maurits van de Laar, With Tsjalling en Lokaal 01 in uiteenlopende tentoonstellingen. Van 10 december tot en met 15 januari is er ook werk van Johan te zien bij Nest (Den Haag), waar hij in The Comic Side of Art zij aan zij hangt met grote namen als Raymond Pettibon, Charles Avery en Martyn F. Overweel.

The work of Johan Gustavsson (1978, SE) has developed strongly in recent years and focusses on interpersonal conventions that are part of contemporary society. In a very subtle way he manages to depict, in his drawings and spatial stagings, tensions between us humans. If you look at his drawings you immidiately recognize the inconvenience in the air and the ghastly silences in which a group dynamic can come to a standstill.
Gustavsson's work stems from highly concentrated - almost meditative - moments. At these moments he lets all his previous experiences coincide and uses the sum of these to relate to the paper. This proces proves him to be more than just an other observer of society, he is an active member. Major issues such as aesthetics, the position of the artist and how art relates to society mix easily with modest snapshots from his own life. Often with an embarrassing and at the same time oh so moving undertone.
In the past 10 years Gustavsson build up an oevre with a distinct signature. To have the continuous development come to a new climax he will present a publication on January 20, 2012. The publication holds a good number of his latest drawings that is interspersed with footage from his own collection of amateur drawings.
For the occasion Flemish art critic Hans Theys (internationally known for his authorship and publishing house) wrote an introduction. The design is made by Nico Feragnoli.
The publication will be presented at the and of the exhibition at LhGWR, on Friday, January 20 at 20:00 hrs.
Johan is an active member of the artistic team of artists' initiative 1646 which is located in the Boekhorststraat, The Hague. As such he curated numerous projects in The Netherlands and abroad. He also teaches at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. In the last few years his personal work has become increasingly important. This is reflected in his recent exhibitions. Among others he exhibited in Berlin, Budapest, Stockholm, Zurich, Johannesburg and Montreal. This year his works were on display at Galerie Maurits van de Laar, With Tsjalling and Lokaal 01. From December 10 to January 15, there is work to be seen at Nest (The Hague) in The Comic Side of Art, where his works will be hung side by side with works of big names like Raymond Pettibon, Charles Avery and Martyn F. Overweel.
